Contraception
Increasing access to long-term contraceptive methods among young women in San Francisco

Young women have traditionally been denied access to the intrauterine device (IUD), a highly safe and effective method of contraception. Together with colleagues at New Generation Health Center at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), we are conducting a cohort study of women aged 15-24 who choose the Mirena IUD or the Implanon implant and will compare them to women who use the injectable Depo-Provera. After following them for one year, we will examine continuation rates, side effects, and acceptability.
