Moving oral contraceptives over-the-counter

Since its first meeting in 2004, Ibis has led the Working Group on Moving Oral Contraceptives (OCs) Over-the-counter (OTC), made up of researchers, advocates, and clinicians throughout the US. With this group we culled existing evidence and developed a document making the case to expand access to OCs in the US, demonstrating that they meet all the FDA criteria for an OTC product. We are also conducting qualitative research in Boston and San Francisco, exploring the perspectives of low-income women and women of color related to OTC access to OCs. Finally, we are consulting with leaders in the pharmaceutical industry about their interest in presenting a prescription-to-OTC switch application to the FDA for an OC product.
