Integrating family planning into HIV care and treatment in Western Kenya

Many programs that aim to reduce mother-to-child-transmission of HIV offer testing and treatment for the mother and infant, but there has been little focus on preventing unintended pregnancy among HIV-positive women. Even when contraceptive methods are available, busy providers are often not well-equipped with the information and materials needed to offer their patients a full range of contraceptive choices. Together with colleagues at the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco and the Kenya Medical Research Institute, we are performing a cluster randomized trial to determine if integrating family planning services into HIV care and treatment increases contraceptive prevalence and reduces rates of unintended pregnancy compared to the standard practice of referring women to a separate family planning clinic. An additional component of this study in Western Kenya is to better understand the reproductive intentions of this population and their interest in using contraception.
