Clinical trials training course at University of the Witswatersrand

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) developed a Master’s level, distance learning (DL) course on clinical trials. With funding from the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership, LSHTM translated course materials into French and made the French and English versions available free of charge under license to institutions in Africa. The overall objective of this work was to strengthen capacity in clinical trials training in African universities by combining high-quality teaching materials with innovative teaching methods, and to enhance existing face-to-face courses and/or develop new courses.

 

Together with the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, Ibis staff developed and hosted a five-day workshop in December 2007 for professionals based at African universities to provide training on and a forum for discussion regarding use of the DL materials for curricula planning and course development at their respective institutions. Ibis staff also used the DL materials to create sample methods, tools, and course outlines for workshop participants for adaptation at their respective institutions.

 

Communication with the workshop participants and coordinators is ongoing.
