MSNBC’s list of the nine most intriguing research studies related to sexuality of 2009 includes the review and commentary published in Contraception on withdrawal as a contraceptive method. In a review of previous research on withdrawal, the authors found that withdrawal’s typical use effectiveness was only slightly less effective than the typical use effectiveness rates for condoms. Based on qualitative research which finds that withdrawal use is more frequent than is often cited, the authors conclude that further research on the method, which is often written off, is warranted, as withdrawal may be a useful contraceptive strategy for many couples.
